Three different things

Cooperative-direct means sourcing from a producer cooperative, a legal entity that aggregates output from multiple smallholder producers under shared governance. The cooperative holds the export licence, issues the contract and owns the commercial relationship.

Producer-direct means sourcing from a single producer or producer-owned company. The producer holds the licence, issues the contract and handles the commercial relationship.

Aggregator-routed means sourcing through an intermediary, an exporter or trading house that buys from multiple producers and resells. The aggregator holds the licence and the commercial relationship; the original producer is one of many contributors.

All three can be credible. None is intrinsically better. But they are not the same and conflating them in marketing copy is how platforms end up with phrases like "origin-direct" that mean nothing in practice.

Why Treviya favours cooperative-direct

Most Treviya cycles source cooperative-direct where the category supports it. Three reasons, in order of importance:

Governance. Cooperatives have boards, bylaws and member oversight. KYB at gate 2 is cleaner, the ultimate beneficial ownership is documented in the cooperative's own governance, not buried inside a trading company structure.

Production visibility. Cooperative membership lists indicate which farms contributed to a specific cycle's lot. For categories where terroir, harvest timing and production method matter, that traceability is built in.

Stability. Cooperatives tend to have longer time horizons than trading companies. A cooperative that enters a multi-cycle relationship is usually in position to honour it. The five-cycle history on cycle #48 (Wildflower honey, New Zealand cooperative) is the shape we're looking for.

Producer-direct, when it fits

Producer-direct works when the producer is large enough to carry export licensing, bonded-warehouse coordination and documentary compliance in-house. For categories dominated by a small number of vertically-integrated producers (cosmetic raw materials, certain specialty oils, bottled extra-virgin olive oil from single estates), producer-direct is often the only credible option.

Gate 2 diligence for producer-direct is heavier than for cooperative-direct, there's less external governance to lean on, so the platform performs its own. A factory audit is mandatory. Independent financial review on the producer entity is standard. References from prior institutional counterparties carry more weight than references from other members.

Aggregator-routed, in narrow cases

The platform uses aggregator-routed sourcing only when neither cooperative-direct nor producer-direct is operationally feasible, for example, in categories where cooperatives are nascent and producers are below minimum scale for cycle-level supply. Aggregator-routed cycles are identified on the brief. Gate 2 diligence covers the aggregator's own KYB, plus traceability evidence back to the contributing producers.

A small number of Treviya cycles are aggregator-routed. None are hidden. The supplier card on the brief always states the structure plainly.

What it costs the platform

Cooperative-direct and producer-direct are operationally more expensive than aggregator-routed. The gate-2 work is deeper. The cycle tenor is typically longer because the supplier often has less financial buffer and needs staged payment. The platform spends more to do diligence and more to coordinate. Those costs sit on the platform-fee line, where members can see them.

The platform accepts the cost because it's the only way to say "origin-direct" with operational meaning. Anything cheaper would leave the phrase doing the work the structure should be doing.
